Sunbury Homes and Their Kitchens

Sunbury has two quite different housing stories. The established township grew in stages, including a 1960s plan to make Sunbury a satellite city of 40,000 people; the scheme collapsed after the 1961 credit squeeze, but not before new housing was built. Victorian Places notes that most of those houses are weatherboard or fibro cement.

More recently, the Sunbury South and Lancefield Road precinct structure plans, approved in 2019, opened large areas for new homes. So a Sunbury kitchen renovation might mean replacing a 60-year-old kitchen or reworking a much newer one. We plan the new layout and finishes with you, coordinate the plumbing and electrical trades, and install the kitchen. Your scope is confirmed in a written quote.

  • Replacing an older kitchen

New cabinetry, benchtops, splashbacks and appliances in a township home.

  • Planning for the long term

Layouts, heights and storage that stay easy to use as needs change.

  • Reworking a newer kitchen

Better storage, an island or a more practical layout in a recent build.

Local planning

A Kitchen for Ageing in Place

Hume City Council describes central Sunbury as having a significantly older population ageing in place. If you plan to stay in your home for the long term, the kitchen is one of the best rooms to plan for it.

Easier to reach

Deep drawers instead of low cupboards, a wall oven at a comfortable height, and the most-used items kept between hip and shoulder height reduce bending and reaching.

What to plan: Talk through how each person in the house uses the kitchen now, and how that might change.

Easier to move around

Generous space between benches, good task lighting and a clear path between the sink, cooktop and fridge make a kitchen safer and simpler to use.

What to plan: Check the clearances in the layout before cabinetry is ordered.

Before demolition

Weatherboard and Fibro Homes

Fibro and asbestos

The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency advises that a house built before 1990 is likely to contain some asbestos. In fibro-clad homes of the 1960s, the sheeting itself may be asbestos cement.

What to check: Have suspect wall linings, sheeting, splashbacks and floor coverings identified before demolition is booked.

Older services

A kitchen that is decades old may still run on its original wiring and plumbing, and modern ovens, induction cooktops and dishwashers can ask more of them.

What to check: Ask for the electrical, gas and plumbing capacity to be looked at during the measure and brief.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you design a kitchen that will suit us as we get older?

Yes. We can plan drawer storage, appliance heights, lighting and clearances around how you use the kitchen now and how that might change.

My Sunbury house is fibro. Is asbestos likely?

The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency says homes built before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos, and older fibro sheeting may be asbestos cement. Have suspect materials identified before any demolition.

Will my old wiring cope with new appliances?

It depends on the house. Ask for the electrical and gas capacity to be checked before you choose appliances, especially if you are switching to induction.
